Introduction
The One Day Hike (ODH) may well be the mid-Atlantic region's oldest long-distance day hike. The first 100K (62.14 miles) from Washington DC to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, along the C&O Canal, was held in 1974 and it has been an annual event ever since. In 2000 a 50K version (31.07 miles) was added to make the event accessible to more people. These two hikes are held concurrently with staggered starting points and times. Both hikes proceed on the C & O Canal towpath along the Potomac River, ending in Harper's Ferry, WV, by midnight.
Along the way there are support stations that provide food, drink, and, when needed, medical care, while the Potomac River and C&O Canal provide beautiful scenery, wildflowers, birds, and other wild life. Bike patrols monitor progress and ensure that everyone is accounted for. Although some participants do drop out (don't worry--we help them if they do), many people of all ages have completed the hike. A significant number of 100K finishers are over 60! You too can be a finisher—if you are in good physical condition, train, and prepare properly.
All the information you need regarding training and preparation, logistics, overnight accommodations, driving directions, hike day information and registration can be found on this website.
A few weeks after each One Day Hike, a picnic is held to celebrate the event. ODH hikers and volunteers are invited by email, and the picnic is open to all who are interested. See the Registration link above for more information.
